Neighbors working together turning a recreation center into a community center
About Us
On October 19, 2009 the Friends of Edgewood Recreation Center received its Article of Incorporation from the District of Columbia. Our purpose is to provide services to the residents of Edgewood, to provide resources for maintaining and improving the Edgewood Recreation Center, and to inform the community about scheduled events at the Center. We want to assist with the planning and implementation of both the expansion of facilities and the number of offerings at the Center. We will work to raise private funds and to secure financial backing from
the District of Columbia as well. We will hold regular meetings to
solicit feedback from neighbors about what types of programs to build, and what types of equipment (computers, weight rooms, etc.) would be most beneficial to the residents.
Eventually we hope that the city will greatly expand what is now referred to by government officials as the “Edgewood Field House” (this structure was actually built in the 1940’s). We hope to have a more modern facility, with gymnasium, swimming pool, computer room and weight room, just to name a few of the amenities we wish to see one day. We welcome ideas from all Edgewood residents to join in the planning for the facility in conjunction with the Department of Parks and Recreation—from improved landscaping, adding a community garden and facility improvements, to spring and fall picnics, an expanded playground facility and activities for all ages.
